The Words on the Paper

by Elise Loughran

the words fell upon the paper
a frail assault on my reveries
indelible thoughts meet my pools of timidity
the same pools that winced at your elegies
the same pools that swore to infinity

the words that fell on the paper
were menacing and pitiless
the alignment of our moons shifted
dilapidated ruins of tenderness
the undeniable love drifted

the worst about the words on the paper
was not the twisted and mangled prose
not the unrelenting language that arose
it is the pit that drops in my stomach
each word plummeting down a new depth
each sentence was true, calamitously true

I have nowhere to hide – except from you
