The Way We Faded

by Susan Sim

We were a soft beginning,
Two quiet sparks finding each other
Before we understood what it meant to burn.
You were warm as an early morning,
And I trusted us
The way flowers trust spring to return.
But seasons shift.
Your voice drifted away —
Still a beautiful song,
Just no longer meant for me.
It hurt —
But the ache has softened now.
Even a temporary love
Can leave behind a lasting light.
Some things shine
Only long enough
To help us see the road ahead.
