Isn’t it funny the way you said You’d be the light of my life, Yet stabbed my fragile heart with a knife. You’d endure the fiercest of storms, Yet gave up when the gales took form. Oh, to understand what you meant when you said You’d never make me feel invisible, even on the darkest night, Yet left me hidden in plain sight. You’d stay with me for eternity, without grief, Yet eternity was far too brief. Here I lay, thinking back on the words you said— Even the stars seem to feel pity, As tears don’t look so pretty. Even the drizzle joins in, As I confess to it the misery I’m in. Because now I know what you meant when you said- Even the best things end all the same, A broken soul, scars, an unforgettable name. Even as we speak, the ephemeral fades like mist, Drifting gently, leaving behind all we missed. I swore to shed no more tears for the things you said, Yet I still lift my chin toward the skies, With a flood of tears in my eyes. But as they roll down my cheeks—tears of happiness— They carry a serene, steadfast softness. I shed tears of happiness, not for the words you said, But for how I’m healing from the memory, Escaping, at last, the reverie that held me. The sacred bliss of freedom now surrounds me— For with you, I felt it seldom.
