Childhood Africa

by Joseph C. Ogbonna

Do you remember the good
old days when we roamed
the low density streets
with nappies fastened around
our waists with domestic pins?
The unforgettable days when
we laughed and played,
and got our white nappies
dirt-brown from occasional
and frequent falls in the
street's odious quagmire?
What a real pleasant life
we had then as toddlers,
and children in want-stricken
rural and suburban
Africa.
A nostalgic experience we have
since then, continued to ache
and dream of.
Despite the fights we occasionally had,
despite the chidings and scoldings
we had from elders for our own
misdemeanors,
despite the injuries we so
frequently sustained,
we have never desired less for privileged posterity,
nor have we desired less for ourselves in a
high tech and fast track
world like ours.
Rural life in Africa at sunset, beneath
the Ivory moon, is no doubt an unforgettable
golden experience.
