The Other Season

by A.C. Perri

You thought me cold as I watched the sweet plum blossoms
without any expression, without words, without hesitation,
and when the sun rose from behind the giant mountain,
I did nothing, while you delighted at the splendid sight before us.

You said, Observe!
There goes a moment you will never take back.
All the while you were looking at them, the dark pink plum blossoms.
Naively witnessing avoidance, observing reluctance.

We walked down the path following the quiet spoken stream
filled with new blossom petals, like small faeries
dancing on water, in your bias-filled eyes –
to you I am invisible, the sky to your backdrop.

It is a scene of another year passing,
another wasted moment, another wasted chance for you
to declare your love to me, but you don't, too busy –
I think to myself, Another moment I will never get back.

The sun is above us, you look so small in my eyes
Your eyes devoid of emotions for me,
I envy the plum blossoms, with their alluring sweet scent
You waste all your gaze and attention upon a deviant!

I watch, and listen, my heart breaks as you tell them you love them.
I wished it was me filling up with your words
Momentarily, you turn your attention back to me, and smile –
I walk away into a splendid sun setting.

How can one compete against Spring?
