The Lights of Home

by Anna Nike Leskowsky

They wake my day,
welcoming quiet steps
toward a curious discovery.

I watch them every morning,
as if I witnessed them for the first time
in a panoramic mega-theatre,
placed softly below my feet.

I breathe them in and out
during my early exercise,
mesmerized by their beauty
and thankful for sharing with me
the same undivided space.

I feel humble,
taking the elevator down
from the twenty first floor
to merge into their mercy
when they lead me to work before sunrise
and bring me back right after sunset.

Sometimes they send me
for a short visit at the local salon & spa
where Luigi fixes my hair
for the last twenty years,
talks about Italy,
and asks questions about Poland;
while mirrors around us
reflect the highlights of my hair,
making a true likeness
of their source.

I like to play them like a music video
in the sleepless moments of my dreams.
Their lively notes create a joyful image in the sky,
filled with all the stars of the universe
that help me form a peaceful thought:

These are the lights of my city,
the lights of home,
the lights of Toronto.
