Flash Fiction Contest #3 – First Place

It was 10:00 pm in area 3, the toads were croaking in the dark, and the crickets in the thicket were chirping.
For Izekor, who resided at the Comfort Estate of Area 3, he was anything but comfortable. Why was this? There was a power outage, and all efforts to get a good night's rest remained fleeting.
Izekor had opened his door and windows for the entrance of fresh air, but an unwanted guest followed along.
Who, you ask? Mosquitoes, blood-sucking mosquitoes, buzzing in their numbers, accompanied the evening breeze.
As if the mosquitoes were not enough punishment, the rattling from Izekor’s neighbour’s generator amplified Izekor’s frustration.
“Should I use the insecticide?” he thought to himself, “but where will I now wait for the insecticide fumes to die down?” another of Izekor’s thoughts countered, for he lived in a one-bedroom apartment.
As he was about to decide, his neighbour's generator coughed “Vroom Vroom mm... ...”, turning off. Izekor breathed a sigh of relief, muttering to himself, “One less thing to worry about”, or so he thought!
Some mosquito buzzing minutes later, he overheard his neighbour’s door open, the generator tank top unfastened, and the sound of liquid filling an empty can.
Not long after, the sound “Vroom Vroom” echoed, murdering the ambient silence and shattering Izekor’s placidity. In response, the man let out a long, jarring hiss.
