Wax International Contest #3 – First Place
by Delvine Schuster
Words can be a solace, an escape, a refuge from
the harsh winds of reality.
A hiding place from storms
and a wind beneath our wings,
letting us fly free.
The making of many words can
be wearisome to the flesh.
One can be tossed and thrown about
by the opium effect of words, that can numb
and leave us confused.
Words can dance capriciously
and hypnotise, a jester that lures and imprisons
us to a stifling mindset.
Words are imaginings of worlds
and fantastic feats – use them kindly and wisely.
Words are like spinning windmills
in the windows of my mind,
echoing longings and desires
of beautiful love's splendour,
stolen touches of dreams
and make believe.
Words are my forever young
immortalising thoughts and desires while
flesh succumbs to the ravages of age.
Words, my loyal friend,
my dedicated companion.
