"I Can't See" by Kaylee Lenners

Photo shows a beach view of dark brown sand, as if after a recent rain.
Waves can be seen rolling in.
Two people can be seen near the water, talking to each other and looking at the water.
Incinerator Rock juts out of the water.
The view of the rock is close enough to see the different layers of colour.
Above the rock, clear blue sky.

I Can't See

by Kaylee Lenners

I close my eyes and my subconscious takes me to you
but there is so much fog I can't see through.
I can't see your eyes, what color are they?
I don't recognize the voice within the words you say.
When I look at the mirror,
I question what I see,
Are these your features
passed on to me?

My hazel eyes,
Are they from you?
My hair is uncontrollable,
Was yours too?

I may not remember
because I was so young,

but I know missing you, feels like having a persistent bee sting
without being stung.

Worthlessness has been sewn into the soil of the insignificant,
uselessness rooted deep in the garden of the forgotten.
I wish someone could have helped you, when your whole world went wrong,
because twenty-one years later,
all that's left is an Alanis Morissette song.
