"My Mother Broke Her Leg" by Paige Francis

Photo shows a beach view of dark brown sand, as if after a recent rain.
Waves can be seen rolling in.
Two people can be seen near the water, talking to each other and looking at the water.
Incinerator Rock juts out of the water.
The view of the rock is close enough to see the different layers of colour.
Above the rock, clear blue sky.

My Mother Broke Her Leg

by Paige Francis

My mother broke her leg
So I began to stretch
Furling over
The sickly crack of bones bending unnaturally
Folding bumping marrying at different angles
The white piercing through my brown skin
I shrunk myself
Until I served my purpose
The most perfectly still
The most perfectly strong
And the most perfectly stable
Crutch.
