Gone but Not Forgotten

by Tilly Moodley

My beloved husband, time has gone speedily by,
I take each empty day bearing a smile that is a lie.
In quiet times, the silence allows me moments upon which to dwell,
As I drift off into the past, my emotions, like a rising tide, begin to swell.

I have indeed strengthened to the point where I am equipped to wear my mask,
This closes the door to the questions others are dying to ask.
My pain of losing you is something I no longer wish to share,
Your leaving has shown me that most people don't really care.

So I guard my heart by securing it in a cell,
Only I can open up to let out the hell.
My desperate longing to wrap my arm around your warm belly,
As we gaze at our favourite shows on the telly.

Simple acts of a love ever so wondrous,
Can have an effect on me that is thunderous.
Today is four months that you are gone,
I still feel that without you, I cannot move on.

I recall intricate details of you, like every mark and every scar,
I can still feel the warmth of your hands, despite you being so afar.
You would cup my face in those warm hands, up towards you, tilting my face,
This is now just a fond memory, not an act I shall ever be able to retrace.

I have countless pictures of us which are gold,
For together we merrily grew old.
Believing strongly that we had so much time in our future,
But our dreams were not meant to be – when shall I reunite with you, I am not sure.
