NYC Poetry Magazine Contest #2 – First Place
by Mark Salzwedel
The trees along the street woke up
Early spring
In the distance a tree
Sat on a terrace
Thirty stories up
Imagine sunshine on your leaves
All day, all year
So lucky
Except for the high-altitude winds ripping
Leaves and twigs off
Roots already bound
To suffocate in a cramped planter
Wishing to be on the ground
No longer alone
