Under 25 Poetry Asia and Oceania Contest #2 – First Place
by Derli Juani Putri
I wasn’t searching. I wasn’t even ready. And yet there you were. You walked in like a calm wave, but you hit me like thunder. Not loud, just undeniable. I noticed first the way the air shifted how suddenly the room felt warmer, how your presence lingered even before you spoke. You didn’t see me at first. But I saw you and in that split second, I knew. Exactly my type, my mind whispered before my heart had time to catch up. What is it about you? The way your eyes seem to know too much, the way your laugh dances across the room, the way you lean in just slightly as if you’re listening to something, only I can’t hear. Every little thing you do feels like an invitation. Not a grand one just a quiet, Come closer, if you dare. And I did. I stepped into the glow of your orbit, unaware that I would lose gravity entirely. Our conversations? They felt like strolling through a garden at midnight soft, electric, filled with things that bloom only when the world is quiet. You teased, I trembled. You smiled, I melted. You spoke, and suddenly I was writing poetry in my head just to keep up with what you made me feel. How do you do that? How do you turn a glance into a spark, a touch into a story, a moment into something I replay at night with my hand over my chest, wondering how something so small can feel like so much? You are a collection of things I didn’t know I needed: maturity wrapped in mystery, kindness hidden in silence, a gaze that undoes me without trying. And if you ask me, What exactly do you feel? I’d say I feel like fireworks trapped in a heart too soft for noise. I feel like a page waiting for your handwriting. I feel like I’m falling... but not afraid to land. So no, I wasn’t ready. But if fate insists on playing matchmaker then let it be known: you were exactly my type. Exactly my moment. Exactly the spark that made everything begin.
