Under 25 Poetry USA Contest #2 – First Place

for you

i see the moon
you do too all the way
twelve thousand miles away
we both look up and see her shimmering 
i can feel it
and i love you like the ocean
the sound of waves crashing on sand or the rocks
and drawing back
over and over again. 
i love you every time. 
you love me like the dragonfruit you hand pollinate
with care and precision. 
you love me every time. 

you feel like home to me
and when i'm away it feels like so much
i look for you everywhere
and i build you a shrine
piece by piece of people i find
someone with a fragment of your smile
a hint of your freedom
and even with all of these scraps it can 
never
ever
be you 
i can't wait to come home again
hear you snore
even though you say you don't (you do)
and make crepes in the kitchen
your mom makes me a latte
she's so proud of the foam at the top
and there's cinnamon on top
and we go swim in the sun
because it's bright again

so i turn to everyone i meet
and tell them about you
because you are a part of me
i show pictures of us and say
look, this is her! 
and she is my best friend 
that is the best part
