Weekly Poems Contest #23: First Place
by Clarisse Terblanche
Life was pregnant
with perfect promises.
They rode on empty, ignorant bliss,
but now I'm left in a blurred abyss –
A hole in my soul – it all was false,
fallen hope echoes against cold walls.
Take me back and reverse precious time,
because nothing seems to rhyme.
My memories all fall down slack
and life no longer sings sweet songs.
Pitiful stares bore into my silhouette
apt, because it's my only remains.
There's nothing I don't regret –
the piling guilt, an unremovable stain.
The faster I try to hide,
it explodes in me like a time bomb.
There are only scattered pieces left –
every shard a hopeful dream still unborn.
Biography of the Poet
Clarisse Terblanche: Writing my feelings has always been easier than voicing them.
Putting sentences on paper is a creative outlet that I can call mine.
I love writing stories, reading, being outside to clear my head, and using design as a visual language.
I kept my poetry personal for a long time before I started posting them on Instagram as The Rejected Poems.
It became a way to push my creative boundaries and recognise that even though I don't see my poems as good, others might relate to my turmoil.
Clarisse resides in Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa.
