San Francisco Poetry Contest #1 – First Place
by Brooke Brownlee
You do not see my beauty — you only count my currency. I cannot prove it; I can only feel it. The loss of my divinity for the comfort of empiricism, the sterile light of fact. Now I search for evidence in the ruins of intuition — and find only the wide, echoing void of it. I gaslight myself with scientific theory, rewriting my soul into data. Still, I cannot prove it; I can only feel it. The feeling in my bones is molten lead — heavy, searing, sacred in its burden. Each day I carry the weight of what I surrendered for reason: my tenderness, my mystery, my quiet sense of God. When I hold you, my skin becomes flame. How do I explain this? Language fractures under its own logic. I cannot prove it; I can only feel it. Set me free, I beg of you. Let my soul escape through your eyes. You are unmaking me — I molten to your bed, burning through every proof of self. I cannot prove it.
