You Made the Robot Cry

by Sibi Sidh

Life was plain, simple, and dry —
cold, alone, lost in the thoughts of my own.
That's how I wanted it to be;
life was still plain, simple, and dry.

A rainy night. A stranger followed me home;
the uninvited guest let herself in.
I cooked, I cleaned, I set the table to eat —
then heard a slight squeal.
She stood there, staring:
wet, dirty, ready to share my meal.

I missed the cold, lonely nights. Now it was
short walks, loud barks, tiny sparks;
crazy rides, snoring nights, slightly painful bites —
wait: life wasn't plain, simple, and dry.

I started feeling — though I had no idea why.
I started dreaming — though I had no idea why.
Something set me free.

It was raining again.
The meal was growing cold.
The guest in my bed never woke up.
I had no idea why.
I am lonely now;
I have no idea why.

I was doing fine on my own —
all this way only to be left back alone.
This wasn't me.
I was fine back in my cage;
I wasn't supposed to be free.

Twenty-one years alone; nothing shook me.
One day apart — something broke me.
Take me back to the time
when life was plain, simple, and dry.
You will always be the one who made the robot cry.
