Journey

by Cheryl Vaughan

My cat marks the hours
and the years between
she follows the sun in winter,
and her fur falls apart like a sheep

My leaving and returning
her long configuration
significant as mine
consolidation
a waiting to be found

That hour of spinning
wild chatter at birds near her ear
shiver in her skin
excited
I thought she could die

My long absence
when she lost all her fur
the years for its return
a small reminder, still
and that she hides no more

The moment that she tapped
my face
all seeking eyes
a moth's wing on my cheek
Orion leaping over the moon

Her run with purpose
unanimous voice
and spring
marking all
