my mind wanders like a whirlwind causing chaos underneath my skin wild and dark bright and free these are all the parts that make me my brain it talks too much never knows when to be still a thousand sparks in restless wires a fire living in the attic of my mind words running circles around themselves thoughts stacking on thoughts ideas lighting faster than I can hold them until the noise becomes the weather and I am standing in the middle of the storm they gave it a name once ADHD as if four letters could explain the fireworks behind my eyes the sudden focus that burns like a sun the drifting away mid-sentence chasing a thought no one else can see to survive I learned silence learned to press the off switch learned to paint a smile like a clown bright face steady voice while inside a thousand questions spin and spin and spin all my life I have been too much too loud too deep too restless a river that refused its banks a fire that would not behave then one day in the quiet space between breaths I felt your touch not loud not demanding just a still moment and suddenly the storm paused like wind remembering how to rest like sparks settling into embers for a moment my brain was mine a small warm clearing inside the forest of my thoughts a place where the noise bows down and knowing it exists changes everything
