The Jazz Bar

by Sean Robertson

Rain slick roadside
Wheels glide on distant streets
He fingers the keys
Beautiful lines
On the architect's page

She moves closer
Her chair screeches
Matches the key
The trumpet answers
From the dimly lit stage

Calloused fingertips
On smooth skin
On coiled strings
The bass walks
Like shoes on pavement

Not a single known soul
Improvised faces
Appearances modulated
With each harmonic change
All seven modes, and more

Never the same
They leave together
The melody follows
Drone of engines
The silent rests
