by Fergus Reid
Sand washes softly, To the shore. Scattered by the breeze, Every grain is every other. But if I hold it, Soft but sure, In my hand, I know which one is yours. Feet leave prints, Tears are easy to hide. On a warm summer morning. Look like yesterday's tide. One day you washed me ashore, With the pull of your moon. That glistening dust, Made every day a boon. But the most radiant, Dazzling of shells, Might be an oyster. Scarce nourishment at all. All this is obvious, Clear as the horizon. But the brightest light, Makes it hardest to see. So come, Prepare your bucket and spade. We have something, To mould. We all build castles, In the sand. Even when we're old, And know they'll wash away. But if I close my eyes, I can hear the waves. They ripple through my life, From that long-spent typhoon. And if I close them really tight, I can see that little boy, Who built his castle in the sand, With you.
