Texas Poetry Contest #1 – First Place

Great Blue Heron

by Shana Hollowell

A serene being
stalks through golden reeds.
It raises a slender head and
fans an elongated wing into
a grayish-blue drape.
In the center of its stage,
it spins with the grace of
a ballerina's pirouette.
A curved neck bows and
the creek silences its applause.
In a swift movement,
its skilled beak pierces
through rippled satin.
Minnows stir,
crabs scatter, and
rain falls.
But I remain
because I am in awe
of the performance
of a majestic, marsh bird.
