When I Can't Scream

by Madison Stout

when i can’t scream, i write,
i press the pen down tight,
my hand runs fast across the page,
college ruled, black ink, white.
 
the page can hold what I can’t carry,
it doesn’t flinch or turn away,
it takes the pain and stays with me
until the shaking starts to fade.
 
so when my voice is locked inside
and everything feels too tight,
i choose the pen, i choose the page knowing
when i can’t scream, i write.
