by Paul Lindholdt
High in the alpines a bomber
bellows past at the speed of sound
drowning the calls of gray jays
and setting my teeth on edge.
The blast sounds loud enough
to fell a fir tree,
alien enough to make a cow elk
lose her calf. Miles away
from any town, the ground
beneath the feet of every creature
just trembled, and the air
that buoys the birds gave way.
