Journey Home

by Alisa Karpova

Cold winter wind biting
face and tips of long, thick fingers.
Back aching about to snap
like a twig. Snow crunching
underneath boots
heavier than bricks.
Blinding darkness inside.

Starved,
exhausted,
miserable.

				There is no victory...

The whiff of cooked vegetables,
fresh bread.
Warm air warping
around the wide house.
Children
shouting,
playing,
laughing

Light glowing
from the heart.

Loved,
fulfilled,
happy.

				...without sacrifice.
