The Truth

by Kathleen Lutz

The truth is that truth is strangely subjective –
Something somehow oily and awfully abstract,
Slipping and slithering from sinfully sensuous lips;
Contorting to exist betwixt agile tongues and hard facts.

The truth is that truths mate and mingle and multiply –
And honouring the one may mean decimating the other;
So that while 'I love you' is never quite a blatant lie,
Nervous habits weave webs that tangle new lovers.

The truth is that truth is cumulative in this sense,
Sinfulness and saintliness imbedded within the other –
Contradictions compose my consciousness;
A single shard of one pure truth impossible to recover –

And would slice my tongue and lips to bits,
Could I muster the strength to try and utter it.
