Canada Poetry Contest #7 – First Place

Time Machine

by George Moore

You kickstart this poem 
with a quick downward jump
in your teens. Jump high
come down hard,
push the world into gear.
 
Those ghosts inside the shells
of automobiles, those faces 
passing on the street are flashes
blurred to smears of living paint,
and disappear. Only the bike remains.
 
Medusa hair gone wild 
in the wind, bugs in your teeth,
the balance a thing you cannot think
but be, you cannot pull the bike
out of the present. 
 
Two wheels and you are free,
solo, exposed, driven inward,
secret like a message scratched 
onto the world, the road 
an endless line of verse.
 
In the middle of the night
the traffic lights sync over empty lanes,
you run them at speed and they blink
in perfect timing to your brain
and body merged as one.
