Chicago Poetry Contest #1 – First Place
by Brandi Reynolds
Drifting along the Ottertail,
headed towards the Bois de Sioux,
soon I will be in the Red on this fine autumn afternoon.
A blue heron flies, over the rise.
The clouds go tumbling by.
The current flows north, passing a family of otters.
The sun into its western descent, a dragonfly flutters.
There's a beaver family building a dam.
Soon I'll be back by this way again.
My mind starts to wonder to the distant past,
to when this was Agassiz.
Look, there in the grass!
A hare family is playing with dandelions en masse.
I should start heading southward, my journey's last leg,
lest I continue northbound to Lake Winnipeg.
I sit up and head back toward the dock, I will float.
My small adventure is almost over,
It is time to moor the boat.
