by Mohit Mitra
Dust hangs in a shaft of light, tiny dancers caught mid-motion, and I realize the room has been waiting for the moment my understanding arrived. A hand brushes a railing—mine, or lifted by memory I did not choose. Edges sharpen; the air tastes heavier, each glance, each sound, a ledger of consequences. I see the pattern, subtle, unavoidable, and uninvited clarity presses on my spine. No comfort here, only recognition: the world exists in infinitesimal calibrations, and I, for all my seeing, am participant and witness. A cat slips past the doorway, silent, its movement precise yet unknowing. I smile, small, half-bitter, at the absurdity: even insight cannot soften gravity. I close my eyes for a breath— and in that pause, I touch something undiminished: the cost of knowing is exacting, but knowing is all that remains.
