Chisos

by Connor Colburn

wispy strands of cirrus
rise around the dawn
as a broken yolk of sun
splatters in the early sky.
tangled roots scramble
over scatterings of rocks,
sifting through loose dirt
in search of stolen water.

cacti stretch their arms
against the sunny breeze
like little, bristled dancers
swayed by desert songs.
on spiny backs, they bear
plump knobs of juicy fruit
like brightly colored gems
wrapped in prickled flesh.

eager swarms of chirping
birds perform their warbled
songs like wandering bards
that pass the day abreast.
their syncopated melodies
awaken flower blossoms,
as these tiny music makers
whisk around the desert air.
