I'll See You Again Soon

With aching swollen eyes, I look inwards
Remembering my last words to you in person 
"I'll see you again soon"

As we sit together in this plain room 
Your hands are in mine
Hands that could seemingly fracture from a gentle touch
Still, I hold them tightly 
Thinking maybe if I hold you here, you will stay.

I wonder if there is anything more that I can do for you now
I had my lifetime getting to know you 
But I don't know you well enough at all
Soon, I'll only get to know more about you through others
These memories could never replace you.

Those sad thoughts linger in this quiet room
There is nothing more for me to do now but accept what is
I let you go  
"I love you, goodbye"

Note on the poem: This piece was written after visiting my grandmother for the last time in her hospice bed. It had lived in an email draft with no intended recipient for many years. I decided I wanted to share this poem so my grandmother's memory would have a nicer place to live than in my email draft box.
