Winner: Weekly Poems Contest #26

Steady State: January

by Theresa Shaw

The year arrives without ceremony,
like a system registering input
no error returned.

Calendars insist on novelty,
but time only shrugs
and keeps its habits.

Still,
I audit the minor constants:
that I have carried too long,
that have reached equilibrium.

Beginnings aren't doors, I think,
they're edits,
the sentences that survive
after you delete
what no longer validates.

Biography of the Poet
Theresa Shaw lives in Wellington, North Island, New Zealand, where she writes poetry and stories alongside her work in technology. Her writings draw on love, memory, and the everyday moments that give life meaning. She has always found words to be a place of refuge and connection, and likes to bring private reflections into the open, offering them as spaces where others might also feel at home.
