Brass Buttons

by Perumal Khedaren

The sky bruised orange,
Steam rose through dust motes,
Polishing brass buttons, he watched the crib,
The little one turned in sleep,
Milk dried at the corner of his mouth,
Orders folded in his pocket,
Rifle oil threaded the kitchen air,
She fixed his collar twice,
Smoothed the same crease again,
Held her breath, pressed a kiss to his hair,
A small hand closed around a shining button,
He did not loosen it,
Boots laced at the threshold,
Gravel shifted beneath his weight,
The train whistled beyond the fields,
The door latched shut,
His cup still warm on the table,
Blocks scattered beneath the chair,
Steam thinned above his chair.
