Winner: Weekly Poems Contest #34

A Teacher on Recess Duty

by Breanna Scott

There's rain dancing on your cheek,
and you're a vessel of curiosity,
looking up at me – the widest eyes –
and these big, beautiful,
breathless gulps.
You deliver a flood of questions,
but mainly concerning:
the yellowness of bees, the fate of your dog,
the palatability of onions.
You attempt to tame your tongue,
reconcile with those alacritous lips,
that tend to be keener than your brain.
Though ultimately distracted,
you eventually move onto –
the next spasm of queries.

Form the words, my darling –
I'm here to listen.
