Winner: Weekly Poems Contest #40

Monsoon Season

by Nurzusilawati Nadzri

Rain gathers first
in the loose zinc gutters
of my grandmother’s wooden house.

Beyond the flooded road,
the Ramadan bazaar still glows
under trembling blue tarpaulins.

Men roll their trousers
through brown water,
balancing plastic bags
of warm rice and sweet tea.

From the small surau,
the night prayer drifts slowly
across the storm-dark village.

Inside, old pelita ayam
flicker softly beside woven mats
and damp sandals.

The sea keeps breathing
somewhere beyond the coconut trees,
as if nothing here
has ever truly drowned.

surau – Muslim prayer hall
pelita ayam – traditional kerosene oil lamps
