Caesura

Silence creates a vacuum 
others rush to fill.

In that well of possibilities 
I wait, silent and still.

Vivaldi’s L’inverno scrapes 
Against my sensibilities.

Gossip, frenzied
Rising in trills and rills of exquisite 
tightness.

And I
in the caesura which comes –
smile.

Beneath the staccato dissonance,
the ice breaking and cracking
I remember her still.

Fingers gently stroking 
the tourmaline stone –
inherited comfort 
warms.

The cello’s pizzicato
Lower octaves reach into
my body, 
earthing the moment.

And I 
let the others keep 
talking.

Biography of the Poet
Michelle Brown is a writer living on Turrbal land in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. She is a history teacher and has been fascinated with how the songlines of her history intertwine with those of the land she has the pleasure to live on.
