Winner: Weekly Poems Contest #43

Wild Rose

by Keely O'Brien

symbolic in your colour alchemy, pink
purity and carnal force, in plight
there is a difference in in expectation

a rose is not expected to be others'
                                                         mirror
reflecting a vision that reveals the social control
ritual and performance
all to fill a role

a rose is expected to bloom
to fullest potential
all shades of pink
petals are supple
and the plant is expected to grow
as strong and healthy as can be

as summer turns to autumn
the wild rose is still prized for the rose hips
and their richness
before winter comes
even after first frost

like the rose who is really a rose
rather than a metaphor
I tell the girl to bloom and become
who she really is
to show her full beauty in magnificence
rather than fight and control
release and become

late spring of June
the rose buds form
opening to bloom, bloom, bloom
