25 to 50 Poetry Contest #1 – First Place
by Emma Robinson
There was a time I drifted through days like ash on still air hands touching life but never really holding it. The sun rose but it meant nothing. The river moved but I did not. Everything was fine that dull, heavy word that silences hunger and numbs the edges of the heart. Apathy is a quiet thief. It doesn’t break down doors it just waits until you stop knocking on them yourself. I don’t remember the moment I turned toward the world again. No fireworks no saviour. Just a slow, uneasy stirring a breath that wanted to matter a pulse I could finally feel. Love... when it came, was not the hero of the story. It was the reflection of what I had been missing the warmth I had to choose before I could offer it. Apathy is easy. It costs you nothing to stay. But everything to return from. And yet the moment you decide to lean in to feel even the smallest thing the world starts to breathe with you again.
