Where the Roots Remember

by Tania Winther

Time does not move forward here.
It breathes,
in and out,
like an old animal that has never known fear.

Beneath my feet,
roots thread themselves through centuries,
carrying stories the wind has long forgotten.
They are older than borders,
older than the names we give ourselves.

I listen.
The silence is not empty — it is full of voices
that no longer need mouths to speak.

I have been many people
in the same body.
A child who believed the sun
could be held in a shell.
A woman who learned
that light does not stay
when it is owned.

Somewhere between the gum tree and the fjord,
between the saltwater and the stone,
I left a version of myself
in every season.
They wait for me still,
patient as soil.

I used to think faith was a place.
Now I know
it is a returning.
Not to a god,
but to the quiet pulse of what has always been.

The earth remembers
even when I forget.
And when my bones are dust,
the roots will still whisper
my name
into the long, breathing dark.
