The World Made by Your Collarbones

by Gina Gaebl

Here I am,
locked by flesh into this moment:
half-sun, pavement stretching before me,
river-like,
taking me to the place where I will spend the day.
I am a leaf atop som buoying surface,
forever gliding from here to there,
still tasting yesterday's silt
on my tongue.
I am fastened
to the prow of some slow-moving
and behemoth ship,
I am conjurer of phantom horses
who thunder toward emerging lands,
I am memoir studier,
page rifler,
studier of the book of genesis.
I am uncomfortable
at the crux of it all.
If my flesh must bear the weight of an anchor,
may it also take a welcoming shape.
May it be nest-like,
sloping softly in the middle and
waiting, gentle
with the grace of a mother
for a pebble containing the universe
to be laid down.
Maybe you can help me,
lover.
You press your hand into me
and my molecules loosen,
unfasten, stretch outward
and flatten under you.
My fish-eye is replaced by
a microscope,
and I pore over the scent of the world
made by your collarbones.
This is singularity:
it need not, perhaps cannot
be achieved alone.
My visions slide away on the wind
of shared breath,
my projections coil back into their stems,
and I relax in my self
again.
